About the Caledonian Canal
First opened in 1822, the Caledonian Canal provides an alternative inland route for commercial shipping, and an established holiday cruising market.
The Canal raises the water from sea-level in the south at Fort William up to the height of the fresh-water lochs along the way, and then back down to sea-level at Inverness.
The Canal is an integral part of the Great Glen and provides a great deal of interest to visitors.
